15th October 2021 – The Day Meena Left Us… But Never Left My Life ❤️🙏

15th October 2026 – Five Years Without Meena's Loving Company

Today is 15th October.

Exactly five years ago, on 15th October 2021, I lost the loving company of my life partner, Meena.

That day was Dussehra (Dasara) — a day we celebrate as the victory of good over evil.

But for me and my family, that Dussehra became a day that changed our lives forever.

Since then, Meena has not been physically with us. But does someone who has shared so many years of your life ever really leave you?

I don't think so. 😊❤️

Today, on her fifth Punyatithi, I want to share some memories of her last few days and my thoughts about something we all know but rarely like to discuss openly — the ultimate truth of life: Death.

Those Last Few Days at Joshi Hospital

It was Monday, 11th October 2021.

Meena was admitted to a special care room at Joshi Hospital, Pune.

I was staying with her in the hospital room.

For me, it was quite natural. When your life partner is unwell, you want to be around, not because someone expects you to, but simply because you feel you should be there.

I still remember the evening of 14th October 2021.

Harshad, Priyanka and Abhishek came to meet us at the hospital.

One by one, they spent some time with Meena.

Abhishek was particularly concerned about me. He insisted that he would stay with Meena that night and that I should go home and take some rest.

But I refused.

He tried convincing me again.

Finally, he approached Meena, hoping she would persuade me.

And Meena, knowing me so well, told him something that still brings a smile to my face.

"Try your best, but I don't think it will happen!" 😊

That was Meena!

She knew me so well that she was absolutely confident I would not agree to leave her alone at the hospital.

Even today, when I remember that conversation, I smile.

These are the little moments in a relationship that become priceless memories.

That evening, Meena also made video calls to some of her friends.

We had no idea that those would be among her last conversations with them.

15th October 2021 – A Morning I Will Never Forget

The next morning started quite normally.

The hospital team came for their regular checkup.

Meena was in a cheerful mood.

She told me that the checkup would take some time and suggested that I go outside and have some tea.

So I went out.

I was having tea near Kamala Nehru Park Road, where I happened to meet our Rotary friend, R. T. Kulkarni.

It was just another ordinary morning.

A cup of tea. A familiar friend. A normal conversation.

Nothing suggested that my life was about to change forever.

After finishing my tea, I returned to the hospital.

But this time, things were different.

The doctors informed me that Meena's condition had become serious and that they were trying their best.

Those words changed everything.

And despite all their efforts, we could not save her.

On 15th October 2021, the auspicious day of Dussehra, Meena left us forever. 🙏

The person who had confidently told Abhishek just the previous evening that I would never leave her alone in the hospital was no longer there to speak to me.

Life can change so suddenly.

One moment, we are planning the next day.

And the next moment, we are left holding memories of yesterday.

Punyatithi – The Ultimate Truth Day of Everyone's Life

Today, I want to discuss something that we generally avoid talking about.

Death.

In our Indian tradition, we call the death anniversary of a loved one Punyatithi —

We remember the person, offer our prayers, and revisit the beautiful memories they have left behind.

But have we ever thought about one simple fact?

One day, each one of us will also have our own Punyatithi!

Isn't that the ultimate truth of life?

We celebrate birthdays every year with great enthusiasm.

We make plans for the future.

We worry about our careers, money, property, family relationships, success and failures.

And that is perfectly natural.

We must live our lives, fulfil our responsibilities, enjoy our achievements and make plans for tomorrow.

But while doing all this, we should never forget that our time on this beautiful planet is limited.

We know our date of birth.

But nobody knows their date of departure.

And perhaps that uncertainty is what makes life so precious.

Birthdays remind us that life has been given to us. Punyatithis remind us that life is not permanent.

Both have something important to teach us.

Ganesh Chaturthi Took My Younger Brother, and Dussehra Took Meena

There is another interesting, though painful, coincidence in my life.

On Sunday, 26th August 1979, the auspicious day of Ganesh Chaturthi, I lost my younger brother Tushar in an unfortunate drowning accident.

I have shared that deeply personal experience in my earlier blog:

Ganesh Chaturthi – Memories from 1979 to 2026

And 42 years later, on 15th October 2021, the auspicious day of Dussehra, I lost Meena.

Two of the most painful events of my life happened on two important Hindu festival days.

Does it mean anything spiritually?

I don't know.

And I don't want to draw any supernatural conclusions from these coincidences.

Festivals are occasions of joy, devotion and celebration. But life does not promise that sorrow will stay away on those days.

For the world, those dates remain festivals. For our family, they also carry memories of two loved ones who are no longer physically with us.

And I believe we should continue celebrating these festivals with devotion and happiness while remembering our loved ones with affection.

That is also a way of respecting the beautiful life they shared with us.

Marriage Is Not Just Living Together. It Is Growing Together.

Meena and I got married on 10th March 1988.

Our journey together lasted more than 33 years.

Like every married couple, we experienced happiness, challenges, disagreements, responsibilities, celebrations and countless ordinary days.

And I believe those ordinary days are actually the most valuable ones.

Sharing a cup of tea.

Discussing family matters.

Making decisions together.

Sometimes agreeing. Sometimes disagreeing. 😊

Looking after children.

Supporting each other during difficult times.

And gradually becoming so familiar with each other's nature that words are not always necessary.

That small conversation between Meena and Abhishek on 14th October was a perfect example.

She knew exactly how I would react!

That understanding does not develop overnight. It comes from years of living together.

I have written more about our journey in another personal blog:

Our Marriage – A Journey of Friendship

And I have also shared my earlier memories of Meena here:

Memories of Meena

What Has Life Taught Me After Losing Meena?

Five years have passed.

Life has continued.

And it must continue.

There are family responsibilities, social activities, Rotary work, friends, new projects, new ideas and new opportunities to contribute to society.

I still enjoy learning new things, meeting people, sharing knowledge and doing something meaningful every day.

But there are moments when you wish your life partner were sitting beside you to share a small achievement, discuss an interesting incident or simply have a cup of tea.

And that is when you realise the real value of companionship.

Money can provide comfort.

Technology can connect us with the world.

Success can give us satisfaction.

But the loving presence of someone who truly understands you is something different.

After all these years, I feel that the best way to remember a loved one is not merely to feel sad about their absence, but also to celebrate the beautiful memories and values they have left with us.

I believe Meena would have wanted us to continue living happily.

My Simple Philosophy – Enjoy This Beautiful Life While You Can! 😊

At 65, after experiencing both the joys and painful losses of life, I feel increasingly convinced about one thing.

Life is beautiful, but it is also temporary.

So why waste too much of it on unnecessary arguments, ego, jealousy, misunderstandings and bitterness?

Of course, disagreements will happen.

Every family has its own stories. Every relationship has its challenges.

But whenever possible, let us resolve our differences, forgive one another and move forward.

Call that friend you have not spoken to for years.

Spend some time with your parents while they are around.

Appreciate your spouse.

Enjoy the company of your children and grandchildren.

Take care of your health.

Learn something new.

Help someone who needs support.

And most importantly, don't postpone every little happiness for some imaginary perfect future.

Because tomorrow is never guaranteed.

We cannot decide how long we will live.

But we can certainly make an effort to decide how meaningfully, happily and lovingly we live.

Meena, Five Years Have Passed… ❤️

Dear Meena,

It has been five years since that Dussehra morning.

Life has moved forward, but your memories remain part of my everyday life.

Whenever I remember your confident reply to Abhishek — "Try your best, but I don't think it will happen!" — I can still imagine your smile. 😊

And I smile too.

Thank you for those wonderful 33 years of companionship, for our family, for your love, and for all those beautiful ordinary moments that have now become extraordinary memories.

You are not physically with us today.

But you remain with us through our memories, our family and the life we built together.

On your fifth Punyatithi, my loving remembrance and heartfelt gratitude. ❤️🙏

A Thought to End With…

"We come into this world with a date of birth, and one day we leave behind a date of death. What really matters is how we lived, loved, helped others and touched lives between those two dates."

So let us enjoy this beautiful journey called LIFE!

With love, gratitude and a smile. 😊❤️

Remembering Meena with love on her fifth Punyatithi. 🙏
